The Birman is known as the Sacred Cat of Burma. The Vanderbilts are believed to have been given two Birmans by a Burmese temple servant, which were then bred to produce Birman Cats in the West. Cats similar to the Birman are described in ancient Thai writings. Birmans were sacred priestly cats of the Khmer People of ancient Thailand. The Birman was once known as the Lynx Cat of Laos.
